Deducting an Area or Length from a Takeoff

Oftentimes, you need to subtract a portion from an existing takeoff, such as removing an island from a flooring area or a door opening from a wall length. Togal.AI provides tools to handle these deductions.

Deducting from an Area Takeoff: Subtract Tool

This is used to create holes or cutouts in an area measurement.

  1. Create the Main Area: First, perform your main Area Takeoff for the overall space (e.g., the entire room’s floor)

  2. Activate the Subtract Tool: Select the same Area Takeoff polygon.. On the left control menu, select the Subtract tool

  3. Draw the Deduction Area: With subtract tool activated, draw a new polygon over the area you want to remove (e.g., the kitchen island)

  4. View the Result: The area of the deduction will be subtracted from the total area of the original shape. The net area will show up on the right Quantities Panel. Visually, the deduction area appears as a solid white space to indicate it’s a negative space

  5. (Optional) You may further assign a new classification to the deducted space by selecting the polygon inside, right click the selected polygon, and select “Create and Fill” to fill the hole with a new classification

Deducting from a Linear Takeoff: Split Tool

This is used to subtract lengths for openings like doors and windows from a total wall length.

  1. Create the Main Linear Takeoff: Draw the total length of the wall(s).

  2. Activate the Split Tool: Select the same Linear Takeoff, and activate the “Split Tool” on the left control menu

  3. Draw the Deduction: Draw a line across the linear classification where you want to split it. Double click to complete the split

  4. View the Result: The original linear takeoff will be divided into two or more segments, and you may delete the segment as needed to subtract the length from the total length
