Classifications are the organizational backbone of your takeoffs in Togal.AI. They are essentially categories or labels that you create to define what you are measuring.
Think of them as digital highlighters or colored pencils. Before you measure anything, you first decide what it is (e.g., “Carpet,” “Drywall,” “Concrete Slab”), and you assign it to a classification.
Key Concepts
Organization: Every takeoff—every area, line, and count—must belong to a classification. This is how the software groups and calculates your quantities.
Properties: A classification holds the default properties for the takeoffs within it. This includes:
Name: The description of the item (e.g., “ACT Ceiling Grid”).
Type: Area, Linear, or Count.
Color & Appearance: The default color, fill, or symbol for the takeoff.
Folder/Group: A way to organize your list of classifications (e.g., by trade or CSI division).
Quantification: The Quantities Panel organizes all your data based on these classifications, showing you a subtotal for each one (e.g., 5,000 SF of “Carpet,” 1,200 LF of “Drywall”).
Example
You create a Linear classification called “Interior Wall - 4 7/8”“ and make it yellow.
You create an Area classification called “Carpet Tile - CPT-1” and make it blue.
You create a Count classification called “Door Type A” and give it a circle symbol.
Now, when you select the “Interior Wall” classification and draw on the plan, you are measuring the total length of those walls. When you select “Carpet Tile,” you are measuring the total area of that flooring. Similarly, when you select "Door Type A", you are counting the number of doors.
Properly setting up your classifications is the most important step for creating an organized, detailed, and accurate takeoff.
