Creating classifications is the first step you’ll take before you begin measuring on a drawing. You’ll create a classification for each unique item you need to quantify.
You can create new classifications from the Quantities Panel within the Drawing Editor.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Open the “Create Classification” Dialog:
On the top right corner of the Quantities Panel, click the “+” button to add classification.
2. Select the appropriate classification type:
Togal provides 4 main types of classifications based on the kind of measurement you need.
Area Classification: Used to measure surface areas such as area of ceilings, slabs, or floors
Linear Classification: Used to measure linear objects such as length of walls
Count Classification: Used to count objects such as number of doors, windows, or fixtures
Repeating Group: Used to apply the same takeoff from a master template across identical typical plan areas.
Choose what kind of measurement this classification is for. This is a critical setting and cannot be changed later.
3. Fill in the Details: After making the selection, a corresponding classification detail window will pop up. Input the information to setup the new classification.
Name: This is the most important field. Give the classification a clear, descriptive name. Be specific.
Good Example: “LVT-1 Luxury Vinyl Tile”
Bad Example: “Flooring”
Appearance (Optional but Recommended):
Choose a color for the takeoff.
For Areas, choose a fill color and transparency.
For Counts, choose a symbol.
Output Quantities: You can set up the output quantities and units to be measured. Each classification type comes with a default output quantity, and you can add up to 8 output quantities to capture more quantities from the same takeoff.
Classification Dimensions (Optional): You can set the size inputs (e.g., Length/Width/Height) for a classification. The dimensions are then used in calculating the output quantities (for example: Area = Length × Height).
Folder (Optional): You can assign the classification to a folder to keep your list organized. You can create new folders here as well (e.g., “09 - Finishes,” “08 - Openings”).

4. Save the Settings and CreateClick the “Save” button to finish the setup.
Your new classification will now appear in the Quantities Panel, ready for you to select and use for your takeoffs.
Investing a few minutes to create well-named and organized classifications will save you hours later.
