Linear Classifications: How to Create, Draw & Edit

Linear classifications are used to measure length-based takeoffs, such as walls, curbs, piping runs, or any scope where the primary quantity is linear footage.

To create a new linear classification, go to the Quantities Panel, click the "+" symbol on the right side menu and select "Create Linear Classification" .

To Create a New Linear Classification

  1. Go to the Quantities Panel
    ​     Go to the Quantities Panel on the right side of the Drawing Editor.

  2. Add a new classification
    ​     Click the “+” button at the top of the Quantities Panel.

  3. Select “Create Linear Classification”
    ​     This opens the classification editor.

  4. Set classification properties
    ​     In the Create Linear Classification window, setup the classification details:

    • Name: make it clear and specific, e.g., “Wall Paint”

    • Color: select from a wide array of colors for each classification

    • Output Quantities and Units: Length is the default quantity; and you can add additional outputs as needed), such as:

      • Vertical Area 1 Side (1 side of the vertical area of a wall)

      • Vertical Area 2 Sides (Vertical area of both sides of the line)

      • Vertical Area All Sides (Vertical area of both sides of the line and top & bottom)

      • Horizontal Area

      • Volume

      • Perimeter

    • Classification Dimensions (Optional): input height/thickness/offset/slop to calculate other quantities

    • Classification Folders (Optional): organize by trade, phase, or CSI division

5. Save the setup

After the setup, click Save. Your Linear classification is now ready to use.

Draw a Linear Takeoff

  1. Activate the linear classification
    Double click the classification name or single click the line icon in the Quantities Panel to activate the linear classification.

  2. Trace the path
    Click to place points along the line you want to measure.

  3. Finish the line
    Double-click to complete the takeoff. The quantity updates automatically in the Quantities Panel.

Edit an Existing Linear Classification

Use this when you need to change the name, appearance, outputs, units, or dimensions of the linear classification.

  1. Locate the classification in the Quantities Panel

  2. Right-click the classification and select “Edit”to open the Edit panel

  3. Update properties such as:

    • Name

    • Color

    • Output quantities and units

    • Dimensions (e.g., height inputs used for calculations)

  4. Save the changes

Classification Properties for Linear Classifications

You can specify Height, Thickness, and Slope in the classification properties:

  • Height/Thickness are used when you need area- or volume-related outputs (e.g., vertical area).

  • Slope impacts the length calculation only.
