Creating an Assembly

Creating an assembly involves defining a “parent” item (what you’ll measure on the plans) and then adding multiple “child” items (the materials and labor) with formulas that calculate their quantities based on the parent.

Assemblies are typically created and managed in the main Library.

You can choose materials from the built-in Materials Library, or create your own with custom unit costs.

If you're building a drywall Assembly, Togal.AI will suggest common components and calculation formulas to get you started.

These can all be edited to fit your needs.

How to Create an Assembly

  • Go to the Library

  • Open the Library from the top right of the screen

  • Open the Assembly Tab

  • Inside the Library, you’ll find a new tab called Assembly

  • Click “Create New Assembly”
    You’ll be asked to enter details about the Assembly, including whether it applies to an area, linear measurement, or count. These settings help keep your Assemblies organized and easier to use in takeoffs

  • Add Components and Properties If you selected drywall, Togal will suggest a typical list of components used in wall assemblies like Studs, Top Plate, Wall Sheet, Insulation, Joint Tape, and Joint Compound. Pick the ones your assembly needs, or use Create Component to add your own. You can also search the list by name or type.

    • Each component has properties you can edit, such as material type, unit cost, and waste factor

    • You can also add custom properties as needed

  • Edit Calculation Formulas
    Togal suggests formulas to help you calculate how much of each material you’ll need based on the quantity

    • You can use or modify these formulas, just like in our Custom Formulas feature and can reference both standard properties (like the classification's height) and any custom properties you've added to the assembly

    • Formulas can reference both standard and custom properties

    • The waste factor you set on a component is applied on top of the formula result, so you don't need to build waste into the formula itself

    • Formulas within the same component can also reference each other: use the result of one formula as an input to another — for example, calculate the number of sheets first, then reference it to calculate the fasteners needed. This keeps the logic in one place, so when the first formula changes, everything built on it updates automatically.

  • Save Your Assembly
    Once you're done adding components and setting up calculations, click Save. Your custom Assembly will now be available to use in any project.

    It is now ready to be imported into a project and used for takeoffs.
