Applying Assemblies to Takeoffs

Using an assembly is very similar to using a standard classification. You import it into your project from the Library, select it, and perform a takeoff.

Step 1: Import the Assembly into Your Project

  1. From your project’s Quantities Panel, choose “Import from Library”

  2. Navigate to the Assemblies tab or folder in your Library

  3. Select the assembly you want to use (e.g., “Interior Partition - 4 7/8” - 9ft High”).

  4. Click “Import”. The assembly will now appear in your project’s Quantities Panel, looking just like a regular classification

Step 2: Perform the Takeoff

  1. Select the Assembly: Click on the assembly name in your Quantities Panel to make it active

  2. Perform the Parent Takeoff: Use the appropriate takeoff tool (as defined when you created the assembly). For our wall example, you would use the Linear Takeoff tool

  3. Draw on the Plan: Trace the walls on your floor plan just as you would with a normal linear takeoff

Step 3: View the Results

This is where the magic happens.

On the Drawing: You will only see the simple linear takeoff you drew.

In the Quantities Panel: You will see the parent assembly with its total linear footage.

In the Excel Export / Reports: When you export your quantities, the report will be “exploded.” It will show not only the parent linear takeoff but also a detailed list of all the calculated child items:

  • Interior Partition - 4 7/8”… 1,250 LF(Parent)

  • 5/8” Drywall Sheet: 22,500 SF(Child)

  • 3 5/8” Metal Stud: 940 EA(Child)

  • Top/Bottom Track: 2,500 LF(Child)

  • …and so on for every item in the assembly

By applying an assembly, you are performing a simple visual takeoff while simultaneously generating a detailed, multi-item bill of materials in the background.
