How to Draw Different Shapes with Area & Linear Classifications

When manually drawing takeoffs with a classification, Togal gives you four shape modes. You can switch between them from the bottom tool menu while drawing, or use the keyboard shortcuts.

How to Start Drawing:

  1. Activate a classification
Double-click the classification you want to use.

  2. Choose a shape mode
Use the bottom menu to select the drawing mode, or use the shortcut key below.

  3. Draw and finish
Click to place points (or click-and-drag for rectangle/circle), then finish the takeoff as normal.

Shape modes:

1) Polygon (Shortcut: Esc)

Best for: complex or irregular areas

  • Activate Polygon from the bottom menu or press Esc

  • Click to place multiple points around the boundary

  • Use as many points as needed to match the shape accurately

  • Double click to finish the polygon

2) Arc (Shortcut: A)

Best for: curved edges (rounded walls, curved boundaries)

  • Activate Arc from the bottom menu or press A

  • Place three points:

    1. Start point

    2. End point

    3. Center point (defines the curve)

  • You can create multiple connected arcs in sequence if needed

  • Double click at the last point to finish the takeoff

3) Rectangle (Shortcut: R)

Best for: perfectly rectangular areas

  • Activate Rectangle from the bottom menu or press R

  • Click the first point to set the rectangle’s top-left corner.

  • Drag your mouse to define the rectangle’s size.

  • Click the second point to place the rectangle at the desired dimensions.

4) Circle (Shortcut: C)

Best for: circular takeoffs (round pads, columns, circular features)

  • Activate Circle from the bottom menu or press C

  • Click the first point on the circle’s edge.

  • Drag your mouse to adjust the circle size.

  • Click the second point to place the circle.

Quick Tip:

Use Polygon for most irregular conditions, and switch to Rectangle/Circle/Arc when geometry is clearly regular—this keeps takeoffs cleaner and faster to edit.
