Area Classifications: How to Create, Draw & Edit

Area classifications are used to measure surfaces on drawings—such as flooring, roofs, slabs, or painted areas. An Area classification can report Area by default, and you can add additional outputs like Perimeter, Volume (when height is provided), or Tile Count.

To create a new area classification

  1. Go to the Quantities Panel
    ​     Go to the Quantities Panel on the right side of the Drawing Editor.

  2. Add a new classification
    ​     Click the “+” button at the top of the Quantities Panel.

  3. Select “Create Area Classification”
    ​    This opens the classification editor.

  4. Set classification properties
    ​     In the Create Area Classification window, setup the classification details:

    • Name: make it clear and specific, e.g., “Carpet Tile – CPT-1”

    • Appearance: color and area fill/pattern

    • Output Quantities and Units: Area is the default quantity; you can set up multiple output quantities for conditions like Perimeter, Volume and Tile Count.

    • Classification Dimensions (Optional): input height/offset/slop to calculate other quantities

    • Classification Folders (Optional): organize by trade, phase, or CSI division

  5. Save the setup
    ​     After the setup, click Save. Your Area classification is now ready to use.

Draw an Area Takeoff (Polygon)

  1. Activate the Area classification
    ​    Double click the classification name or single click the square icon in the Quantities Panel to activate the area classification.

  2. Trace the boundary
    ​     Click to place points around the area you want to measure.

  3. Close the polygon
    ​    Double-click to finish and close the shape. Togal will calculate the quantity based on your output settings.

Edit an Existing Area Classification

Use this when you need to change the name, appearance, output quantities, units, or dimensions of the area classification.

  1. Locate the classification in the Quantities Panel

  2. Right-click the classification and select “Edit”to open the Edit panel

  3. Update properties such as:

    • Name

    • Color / pattern

    • Output quantities and units

    • Dimensions (e.g., height inputs used for calculations)

  4. Save the changes

Edit an Area Takeoff Shape (Polygon)

  1. Select the polygon on the canvas

  2. Adjust as needed:

    • Move the shape

    • Drag points/vertices to refine boundaries

    • Use editing tools (e.g., Split, Merge, Cut/Subtract) when you need to divide, extend, or deduct areas

Optional Area-Specific Properties

Slope

If you’re measuring a sloped surface (such as a sloped roof), you can enter a slope value so the area calculation reflects that condition.

Tile Count (Tile Grid)

If you need tile quantities:

  1. Enable Tile Grid in the classification settings

  2. Enter tile size (and gap, if applicable)

  3. Togal estimates tile count based on the average tile coverage and rounds up.

Average grid area is calculated:

  • Square feet = ((entry 1 + gap) x (entry 2 + gap)) / 144

Tile count is based on the average:

  • round up (polygon area / avg grid area)
