These three tools are the foundation of digital takeoffs. Each one is used to measure a different type of quantity.
Area Classification
What it measures: Surface area (e.g., square feet, square meters)
Used for: Flooring, ceiling, roofing, paving, site grading, painting (wall surface area) etc.
How to use:
Click the + button on the Quantities Panel to add classification
Select “Create Area Classification”, and input the classification details
Click on each corner point of the area you want to measure
A polygon shape will form. To close the shape and complete the measurement, either double-click the last point or click back on the very first point you created
The calculated area will appear in your Quantities Panel
Linear Classification
What it measures: Length (e.g., feet, meters)
Used for: Walls, partitions, pipes, conduit, wiring, curbs, fences, baseboards etc.
How to use:
Click the + button on the Quantities Panel to add classification
Select “Create Linear Classification”, and input the classification details
Click at the starting point of the line you want to measure
Continue clicking at each corner or vertex to create a series of connected linear segments
Double-click the final point to end the measurement
The total length of all segments will appear in your Quantities Panel
Count Classification
What it measures: The number of individual items
Used for: Doors, windows, lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, columns, outlets etc.
How to use:
Click the + button on the Quantities Panel to add classification
Select “Create Count Classification”, and input the classification details
Click on the drawing at the location of each item you want to count
A symbol will be placed with each click
The total count will update in real-time in your Quantities List
